Neil Felton, New Zealand Artist, born 1942

The works I am showing here are in acrylic paint and in oil pastel, plus a few of my photographs(under "other"). My most recent works are in acrylic. Take the Gallery option in the header or, for those who want to read about the gallery and the work, do continue down.

The Gallery
Works are in the following loose categories: Abstract, Sky abs(sky/abstract - landscape also), Portrait, Sea Side, Other(includes some photography). Click on the thumb nails for blow-up.

Colour
I have tried to get a close resemblance of the colour of the original works, however, they will be different as I use different and more primary paint colours to those used on screen and in photography.

Me and the work

I'm a self taught artist - learning from what I do - from what works. It's a personal journey - learning about myself. For me, there are no rules in art. It either works or it doesn't. There is so much said about art, and who knows. I kinda cringe when I think I have found an answer in art. You can pretty well bank on it requiring a different answer next time..

... 25 August, 2010, a friend said to me, but you obviously know a lot about art. Of course, anyone who has painted for a long time acquires a lot of knowledge about medium, composition, colour... but it's still the discoveries, what's around the corner, the next painting that excites.
To those who feel they know nothing about art, all you need to know - to be open to - is what you like and what you don't like, and be prepared to change your mind. Sometimes the painting you immediately love, fades into insignificance after living with it, and one that you initially don't like so much, becomes a favourite.

Art is in the eye of the beholder - old and hackneyed, never the less, true. Art is so universal, it cannot be adequately explained. Thou art. You can start there, if you wish. To be. To create. And there is the art in everything - the right way for the individual..

With my painting I used to think everything I did had to be different - new every time. In a way I still do, but there came a time when I was surrounded by my work and I saw something, snap, and I knew there was no escaping it. It was all me. What was the same about my work was me, like I had a huge hand print across everything I had done. It was a relief, really. I found myself relaxing more, not having to try. I could let it happen more readily.

Early days though. Who knows what's around the corner. Always ups and downs, but cruisy. Hope you see something you like in my work.
I am currently looking for a better studio/ gallery where I can bring my work together for public display. I will publish any new address here. In the mean time, do email me if you have any queries and if you want to view any of my work.

Cheers
Neil Felton
